Michael Scully, sawyer from Limerick. Sent to Newcastle gaol from Tamworth. To be sent for trial
Details:
ATTEMPTED MAIL ROBBERY. On the 9th instant an attempt was made to rob the mail, on its return from Armidale to Tamworth. Spencer, the mail driver, states that a man named Michael Scully presented a gun at him, ordering the mail bags to be at once delivered, but that he (Spencer), who was carrying the mail on horse-back, succeeded in getting out of Scully s way before he had time to fire. On Spencer s arrival in Tamworth he immediately reported the circumstance to the chief constable, who with his usual promptitude, lost no time in despatching troopers Dean and Hogan in pursuit of Scully. They apprehended him at the McDonald, finding in his possession a double barrelled gun and ammunition. Scully was brought before the bench yesterday, and the case was remanded till Monday next. It appears that Scully has been loitering about Carlisle s Gully for the last month. The bench ex- pressed their approbation at the prompt manner in which the police acted in this case. Tamworth, February 15, 1853.
